There’s no shortage of movies to watch on a variety of streaming services, but it can be hard to narrow down your options, with titles coming and going every month. We’re here to help you with a list of the best new streaming movies to watch.
Each week, we bring you our top picks across different services, such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and more. We’ve chosen titles that were added to these services in the past month, offering a mix of streaming originals and older titles that are newly available.
Editor’s Note: We’ll update this list of the best movies to stream weekly as new titles are added or removed.
The Prodigal Daughter (2021)
Netflix – December 17
Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut with this beautiful and heartbreaking portrait of a woman who lives in the shadow of her decisions as a mother. Leda, a middle-aged divorcee English professor, becomes fixated on two fellow travelers during a solo vacation in Greece. As she watches and interacts with the women and their children, she remembers her own daughters and a previous choice to abandon her family, and what it cost her. Getting Oscar buzz, this drama launched on Netflix in December and is still one of the best new streaming movies to watch this week.
Netflix is still the leading premium streaming service, with over 200 million worldwide subscribers. It offers thousands of movies and TV shows to binge-watch, including the ever-growing list of original movies and series including Stranger Things, The Witcher, Bridgerton, and many more.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
HBO Max – December 22
A strange sequel, no doubt, The Matrix Resurrections effectively makes an argument against its own existence, taking on Hollywood’s obsession with franchises, even as it puts its own fresh spin on a film series launched over two decades ago. Reconnected, Neo is convinced that his memories of the well-known Matrix trilogy are in fact part of his own creations as a video game developer. From there, the film weaves together old and new elements to expand on the themes of the original films and give us a radically self-conscious discourse on storytelling under capitalism. It’s obviously a polarizing entry in The Matrix franchise, but if you get the joke, it’s a really exciting sequel, and Warner Bros. has made it available to stream on HBO Max for a month during its theatrical run.
HBO Max is your home for Warner Bros. movies and TV shows like The Lord of the Rings, the DC Comics superheroes and more. It is also home to new and original movies and shows not available anywhere else.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Netflix – January 1
It’s a crime that Sony hasn’t given the green light to the planned sequels to David Fincher’s stellar adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s acclaimed Millennium novels, one of the best new streaming movies worth watching when it becomes available on Netflix. Swedish reporter Mikael Blomkvist teams up with hacker Lisbeth Salander when he is hired by a wealthy industrialist to investigate a 40-year-old disappearance in this gritty neo-noir thriller starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.
It’s a mystery why no one has tried to recreate Walter Mosley’s best-selling Easy Rawlins mystery novels since 1995’s Devil in a Blue Dress. With stellar performances from Denzel Washington, Jennifer Beals, Don Cheadle, and more, the film is proof that Mosley’s writing style works incredibly well on screen. When Easy Rawlins, recently fired and tied up for money, is called in to help find a missing woman in 1940s LA, he finds himself trapped in a criminal underworld of corrupt politicians, racist cops and violent kidnappers.
Not only does Hulu offer thousands of movies and TV shows to stream, it also has original shows and movies like The Handmaid’s Tale. You can upgrade to Hulu Plus Live TV to get live channels, including your local stations.
Three Days of the Condor (1975)
Paramount Plus and Hulu – January 1
A CIA investigator is on the run when his agency is targeted by assassins with suspicious ties to his own employers. This classic cat-and-mouse thriller features great portrayals of Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway as unlikely allies who keep their heads up. It’s one of the best new streaming movies to watch this week for any fan of the spy genre, and you can watch it on both Hulu and Paramount Plus.
Paramount Plus includes thousands of movies and TV shows from CBS, Showtime, and Paramount Pictures. It also includes new and original movies such as The Good Fight, Infinite and more.
Peacock – January 1
A critical and commercial failure, the Gamer of 2009 was far too late to be rediscovered and receive its much-deserved appreciation. Now’s the perfect time, because the sci-fi action player from the directors of Crank has made an appearance on Peacock, where you can watch it for free (or ad-free if you sign up for a paid subscription). The film follows John “Kable” Tillman, a man on death row who fights for his freedom as a human avatar in a hugely popular online game where prisoners can win their freedom – or die trying. The film is a totally unhinged and hyperactive look at our online lives and where we could end up if we let tech billionaires run their course.
NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service offers many great movies and TV shows to stream on demand, along with live news and sports. Best of all, you can watch a lot of the content for free, or watch it all with a paid subscription starting at just $4.99 per month.
Peacock – January 1
What a perfect time to revisit horror classic Scream, just as the latest installment in the iconic franchise hits theaters. A relaunch of the 90s slasher genre, Wes Craven’s Scream is both a loving tribute and an explosion of energy in a genre that has lost some of its luster in the public eye. It follows teenage Sidney Prescott and her friends as they try to evade the mysterious Ghostface killer. The twist is that the characters (murderers and victims) are hyperaware of the rules of horror movies, using them to wink at the audience and evoke new fears. If you liked Scream, you may also try shout 2 on peacock.
Super Troopers, a comedy classic that’s sure to make you laugh, is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film follows a group of Vermont state troopers with a knack for slacking, tricking and hazing each other, and generally doing a terrible job of policing. They need to get serious — or as close as they can get — when a war of jurisdiction puts them at odds with rival law enforcement. If they can single-handedly solve a murder related to a marijuana smuggling operation, they can prove themselves and keep their beloved station open.
Amazon Prime video
Amazon Prime Video provides access to thousands of movies and TV shows to stream. That includes great original shows and movies like The Boys and The Tomorrow War. You can also sign up for other premium services within Amazon Prime Video.
The tender bar (2022)
Amazon Prime Video – January 7
Directed by Academy Award winner George Clooney and starring Oscar winner Ben Affleck, The Tender Bar is a coming-of-age drama based on JR Moehringer’s memoir of the same name. It sees a young JR growing up on Long Island with his eccentric family. Dealing with the disappointment of an absent father, he bonds with his supportive – albeit unconventional – Uncle Charlie and the patrons of the bar he runs.
